Review of Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) by Hannah L — 16 Apr 2011
Four Weddings and a Funeral is a surprisingly funny and entertaining rom-com. With a wonderful cast and some suttle but quick jokes, this movie about the humour of marriage is a comedy classic.
Beginning with a wedding in England and Hugh Grant and Charlotte Coleman rushing to make it on time while saying 'FUCK!' a lot, Four Weddings and a Funeral is about Charles; a man who cannot commit to a relationship. While at the wedding he meets Carrie; a woman who has even more difficulty with relationships, but is quite good at one night stands. The two immediately connect, and continue to meet eachother at another wedding. But just when Charles falls in love he finds out that Carrie is planning her own wedding. With lots of suttle yet brilliant comedy and dialogue, for a '90s rom-com this movie is quite enjoyable. Not only do Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell make a cute couple, but with co-stars like Simon Callow, John Hannah, Charlotte Coleman, and Rowan Atkinson, This movie is completely fun to watch. Packing in some hilarious circumstances that can happen at a wedding with some good writing, this is a rom-com you can trust to be as enjoyable as it is romantic.
Simplistic, yet effective, Mike Newell doesn't make this rom-com a flashy one where flowers bloom and doves appear from nowhere when the characters connect. This movie plays it natural which is great because weddings are real things, and to make a movie that feels real in real events works on a lot of levels, even if the story is comedic fantasy. Scenes last long and never cut into another scene too fast just when things begin to get emotional and thoughtful. There's some really good music to get into with this movie. All movies with weddings should have a good soundtrack.
Believe it or not, but Four Weddings and a Funeral was actually nominated for 2 Academy Awards! Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture! That's a good enough reason to watch this movie alone. This movie is a guaranteed pleasure to watch, even for those who don't like romantic comedies that much.
