Review of Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) by Benjamin W — 18 Jun 2012
Four Weddings and a Funeral is a romantic comedy that actually was very good, and although it was much too long, it still was funny and had a lot of heart. What I loved most about the film was Hugh Grant, who I always have found to be great in these sweet and vulnerable roles like his performance in one of my favorite romantic comedies Notting Hill.
He really brings some good laughs and is the films heart. Andie Macdowell did a good job as well, but really didn't bring any laughs and was just the films romantic interest, but nevertheless she did a fine job.
This large cast all bring some good laughs and it makes this feel like such an important comedy. I usually hate romantic comedies, they usually are so cliche and dumb that it just ruins the experience.
But this film doesn't pull any dumb gags or stupid characters, it knows what it is and just goes for it. It was much too long and that made it get a little boring at times, but overall I felt like I had seen a good film after watching.
It also was hard to keep track of so many characters, but that was just a small issue and didn't ruin the experience. Four Weddings and a Funeral has a good concept and pulls it off well, and although it has a few problems, its one of the few romantic comedies that I enjoyed.
