Review of Four Lions (2010) by Patrick M — 23 Dec 2012
...funny, yes...dark, yes...cutting it a bit fine, yes...this did make me laugh ~ out loud. A bungling group of wannabe terrorists bungling their way around. Omar (Rizwan Ahmed) leads the group, not without plenty of backchat from his followers, and the idea of using a crow as a suicide bomber was too silly for words.
The group is in constant conflict about how they should express their beliefs, what they should say on video, and what they should blow up. Barry (Nigel Lindsay) is the loud mouth of the group, and the one who competes with Omar for the leadership, without success.
A trip to a training camp in Pakistan for two of the group, Omar and Hassan (Arsher Ali) ends comically, and results in them both absconding back to the UK, and from there on the group is arguing, breaking up and generally making a mess of everything they try.
The film's finale, a trip to London as suicide bombers was perhaps just too close to comfort for me, a subject perhaps not to be joked about, but, overall, the film is funny and entertaining, and certainly one I could watch again ~ always a good sign.
