Review of Four Lions (2010) by Jens T — 23 Sep 2011
Christopher Morris had previously satires the very controversial theme, pedophilia. In Four Lions he goes even further with another theme, extreme islamism in britain. We follow four muslims, who occasionally meats and tries to come up with plans of blowing up some place that has some connections to the infidel western world. One of them is an ethnic english convertite, who have grown a typical holy beard. Two of them goes to a terrorist training camp in Pakistan. They are all anxious to blow something up, the problem is, they don't what it is yet.
I admire Chris Morris, who's not afraid to satirize this difficult theme, even though it might offend some one, or an entire religious group. But the whole situation is to ridiculous to don't make fun of it. To bad this movie is barely funny at all, it's just annoying, and there so much unnecessary quarreling which is about three of four parts of the movie, like when two of the friend quarrels about a rabbit, which the other one thinks it's a chicken. The script could have been much better, more intelligent, than this childish humor. But never have I felt easier to see people being blowed up, that was about the only funniest thing about this film. The idea was good, but it don't work if you don't want to freshen up the comedy act, which they didn't do in this film. Conclusion: Good idea, bad comedy. Thumbs Down.
