Review of Four Lions (2010) by Emily T — 13 Mar 2011
A clever, painful farce that uses comedy to explore the problem of suicide bombing, and attempts to defuse the ideological misconceptions built up around the problem of terrorism. In this film, far from being a shadowy force of evil, the face of jihad is that of five inept, bumbling men who, despite it all, command the audience's sympathy.
The film's unlikely combination of comedy and serious subject matter can be difficult to synthesize, but the contradictions it poses encourage a more critical and multifaceted way of thinking about religious extremism.
