Review of Four Christmases (2008) by Christopher J — 25 Dec 2011
I saw this after "Transporter 3" and I must say it was definitely a step up. Although uneven in parts the back and forth between Witherspoon and Vaughn is great. It's nice to see Witherspoon stepping up to the challenge of acting alongside Vaughn who's personality dominates most movies.
In this one she holds her own against him, very nice. One of the major drawbacks of this film is the trailer. Trailers are cut often way before the film is in it's final edit, so if one watches the trailers there are often scenes that don't make it into the film.
From what I could glean from the trailer there must've been a lot of improv on set that while hilarious got left on the cutting room floor. Now this is no doubt due to the sheer number of great organic takes on the same punchline.
Problem: sometimes the apparent punchline from the trailer was better than what ended up in the film. I liked this movie, I don't think it'll become a new christmas classic like "Elf," but I'm game to see it a few more times to see if it holds up.
Some parts are better than others and it sometimes seems like Witherspoon's character got the short end of the comedy goods as far as her "wacky" on-screen family goes; Vaughn's on-screen family was much more comedically ripe.
Good fun, great laughs.
