Review of Forrest Gump (1994) by Matt W — 09 Jun 2013
Well executed, but the surfeit of melodrama fails to conceal the disturbingly reactionary core of the story. The blissfully ignorant and passive fool, who doesn't do anything controversial because it never occurs to him, doesn't just waltz through life, he prospers.
On the other hand, all prominent important characters, all marked with ambition or drive or desire to change, all run aground and need to be saved or vindicated by the fool. And all this is portrayed without the slightest hint of skepticism or irony.
