Review of Forget Paris (1995) by Thomas B — 28 Nov 2007
Mickey Gordon and Ellen Andrews' relationship is doomed from the start -- or is it? Their story, as told by a number of friends (Joe Mantegna, Richard Masur, Julie Kavner) to an initially hopeful bride-to-be (Cynthia Stevenson) -- whose view toward relationships soon turns sour -- has many twists and turns.
We fellow Mickey and Ellen as they cope with job-related stress, Ellen's difficult father and a number of failed attempts to have a child. Yes, it's a romantic comedy; but it's one that has mass appeal due to its direction and humor (for an example of one of cinema's most ridiculously redundant dialogue -- that works -- see "You ask for it, you got it.
..Toyota." Don't understand? You will when you rent the movie.) Because of the intricate story of Mickey (Billy Crystal) and Ellen (Debra Winger), when I first saw this gem on TV, it seemed a lot like "When Harry Met Sally.
" I was almost convinced it was a Rob Reiner film. Learning it was Crystal's baby wasn't a shock; he probably learned how to make this kind of realistic, clever relationship film from one of the best.
