Review of Forbidden Planet (1956) by Christopher F — 05 Feb 2008
Robby the Robot is the Science Fiction Messiah. FP stand apart from other films of it's era, by focus on an intelligent story, then being another McCarthist Witch Hunt. Despite plot-holes, out-dated 50s conservatism and abit of wooden-acting, it's still influential, even those Walter Pidgeon not a villain here, technically, his character's dark appearance can sevre as a template for future Sci-Fi baddies (goatee, kinky black outfit and grey temples), our beloved, "Frank Drebin" is a serious hero, Anne Francis is the typical unwritten female character and Robby, well we all love that big metal goof don't we.
Yeah, this is the first and one of the only successful attemp at mixing Sci-Fi with Shakespeare, you got a Pulp take on the Tempest. Old School Sci-Fi at it's peak, a true landmark.
