Review of Forbidden Planet (1956) by Kenneth H — 20 Aug 2008
Though the special effects and acting style are quite dated, this is still an interesting and enjoyable movie that really captures the excitement of space exploration. There's a great deal of creativity, particularly with the design of the fascinating and innovative Robby the Robot. The pacing does get slow at times, however. Nonetheless, in the end the movie should get credit for exploring the theme of how primal and crude the base nature of humans - and other intelligent lifeforms as well, apparently - can be, and still is, in spite of all the redeeming advances and civilization they have made.
I wasn't a big fan of Commander Adams, though. He came off as a curt, brusque arrogant asshole, like Jack Driscoll in King Kong (1933). And yet, like Driscoll, he somehow gets the girl! Unbelieveable.
