Review of Forbidden Planet (1956) by J K — 11 Jun 2010
Don't let the movie poster and DVD cover fool you. No robots carry around any buxom blondes during this cheesy snoozefest. Anne Francis is a cutie but looks NOTHING like the woman on this cover. In all seriousness, this film, along with This Island Earth and the first theatrical version of War of the Worlds, are considered the fathers of modern sci-fi movies.
Despite being filmed during a time I like to call the "Dark Ages" in science fiction special effects-filmmakers simply made due with silly sets, costumes and Christmas lights back then. It does feature a very young Leslie Nielsen.
God, how old is this guy anyway? Cheesy? Yes. Utter crap? Yep. Enjoyable? Yep.
