Review of For Your Eyes Only (1981) by Catherine W — 16 Jul 2008
After blasting off into absurdity in his last outing, Bond comes back down to earth for his most gritty and realistic adventure since From Russia With Love. The results are phenomenal. Moore manages to be funny, resourceful and ruthless in the Connery tradition and turns in one of his best performances of the series.
Carole Bouquet brings both beauty and great emotional depth to her role as the grieving Melina and is perhaps the most memorable Bond girl since Diana Rigg. Julian Glover and Topol are both wonderful as rival smugglers who really keep you guessing as to which one is Bond's ally and which one is his enemy.
The action scenes are uniformly superb and are thankfully never played for cheap laughs. This film also has my favorite of the many Bond pretitle sequences (Bond gets even with an old nemesis), my favorite closing scene of a Bond film (love that Margaret Thatcher bashing!) and one of my favorite title songs.
