Review of For Your Consideration (2006) by Michael L — 16 Nov 2009
A more dryer and bitter sweet film from the team that made Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind. While something like Best in Show had a level of silliness, this was very satirical about the film industry and the people behind it from the producers and agents of the actors.
Christopher Guest has moved away from the idea of it being strictly a documentary or â??mockumentaryâ?? as it came to be known. Ricky Gervais style owes a lot to Christopher Guest and here he is in one of his films, being rather undermined by the other actors, even when they are improvising their scenes.
Catherine O'Hara and Harry Shearer play actors the tail end of their careers making a film that gets mentioned that either one of them may be in consideration for an Oscar; this leads the narrative to develop around their now boasted egos and vulnerabilities, that is rather heart breaking.
Also, you have a very funny John Michael Higgins as Chuck Porter, a television presenter on an entertainment show that continually mocks the actors of the film called "Home for Purim," before and after the Oscar buzz! Not my favourite film by Christopher Guest and co but still better then nothing.
