Review of For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943) by Ryan H — 03 Feb 2008
Despite the film being largely carried out with longwinded dialogue scenes, I found to enjoy them if only for the eye catching performances by Ingrid Bergman and Gary Cooper. Katina Paxinou in a supporting role was also excellent, and stole several scenes in the film.
A lot of people, understandably, may be put off by its runtime, but the pacing is fine and its an easy one to get through; it doesn't feel sluggish or slow paced during any part of the film.
I have to say I was disappointed with the ending, although not entirely, but I just feel a bit nitpicky about what could have been added/removed from the final scene.
It has some great shots of beautiful scenery as well. Ultimately it is an endearing yet tragic love story, and definitely should be watched, if only for the worthwhile plot and onscreen chemistry between Ingrid Bergman and Gary Cooper (their epic performances; Ingrid Bergman's especially; just stole the film).
