Review of For the Bible Tells Me So (2007) by Richard S — 30 Mar 2008
Here's another heartfelt documentary that will likely underwhelm most viewers who come to it because of the nearly unanimously positive reviews. Everything that's said, needs to be said. The problem is, there's a lot of padding and since this is probably already preaching to the choir, some of it-- especially early on-- detracts from the message. I'm fine with seeing examples of how various families came to terms with their children's orientation, but the more intriguing side of the film relates to how The Bible doesn't support fundamentalists interpretations. As touching as seeing the Gephardts and others tell there stories can be, I was hoping for a bit more historical and interpretive ammo.
That being said, the film keeps a fairly even tone and would be a good piece to show to conservative church goers. In that sense, maybe it's stronger than the score indicates, but personally, it's not all that it could've been.
