Review of For the Bible Tells Me So (2007) by Tania B — 25 Mar 2008
Touching stories about how families struggle to reconcile their church's hateful homophobic message with their love of a gay child. One poor lesbian had to off herself before her mother came to her senses and accepted her for who she was.
The moderate Christianity presented in the film is certainly better than the bitter, hateful venom spewed from many church pulpits, but I would've like to have seen at least one family abandon the ancient book of desert prejudices on which Christianity is based rather than attempt an awkward reformation.
It's really painful to see them try to reinterpret words like 'abomination' to mean 'unconventional'. I mean this, of course, as an argument, not against homosexuality, but against the Bible.
Still, a very thought provoking and emotional film about what should be unconditional love between child and parent.
