Review of For Me and My Gal (1942) by Jackie M — 15 Jul 2008
Putting my biases up front, I love Gene Kelly and Judy Garland, so there was very little chance of me disliking this movie. The song and dance numbers were great, and the pro-war propaganda was at least creative pro-war propaganda.
The movie is definitely a product of its times, though, and will not survive as well as some other MGM musicals. Moreover, the choice to go black and white made this one less vibrant and luscious than other MGM musicals.
Enjoyable, but far from the best MGM musical there is.
