Review of For Love of the Game (1999) by Robbin B — 29 Sep 2007
I give this five stars only because there aren't six. costner's performance was nothing short of brilliant. gotta admit i'm a sucker for sports movies, but this one is so much different. it's not the usual underdog goes superstar story.
it's about a veteran player who realizes that all he ever lived for is not the most important thing in his life. the drama about this is that he realizes that while actually playing the best game in his life.
a perfect game, which is incomparable to any other feat in sports, because it is so rare. since 1880 there have only been 19 perfect games pitched. seasons, decades, entire lifetimes can go by without one happening.
to put that in a movie and a character we truly care about and weave a love story into all of it, is pure genius and makes the movie about as rare a find as a perfect game.
