This film is every bit superior to the classic "Bull Durham." Flashbacks are tightly woven into the expository device of Billy Chapel's (Kevin Costner) swansong performance on the mound. As each inning's vignette retraces the man's notable le career from zenith to nadir as he battles tragedies and personal faults, a truly three-dimensional character emerges.
Even those who do not enjoy a sports movie will find this a truly enjoyable film.
