Review of For All Mankind (1989) by Matt K — 07 Mar 2008
An incredible documentary that is disappointingly short at only 79 minutes. Instead of going the normal documentary route with talking heads and captions and such, Al Reinert decides to just make a freeform montage-like documentary about the voyage to the moon.
He uses only archival footage shot from the ground or by the astronauts themselves while they were in the spacecraft or on the surface of the moon. He also only uses the original radio transmissions or comments from the astronauts to give us the story, there is no traditional narration to guide us along.
This creates a sometimes-confusing, but always fascinating film about how men felt about going to the moon. Some of the footage is breathtaking in its beauty and scope. This film should be seen by anybody with even a passing interest in the space program and/or the moon.
