Review of Footloose (1984) by Darcy S — 31 Aug 2009
Good rather than great, the film has a predictable storyline. The film could have worked really well as a comedy - there are plenty of moments which the film-makers could have had serious amounts of fun with, for example the dancing scenes.
Instead, the film-makers have decided to create a fairly serious drama, which would normally be fine. But here though, the movie goes into sentimentality often and feels like it should be a more fun than it is.
However, this is a film that has aged well - the dated feel of it, the cinematography (with lots of close-ups of feet) and the dancing has made 'Footloose' iconic. One other thing worth noting about this movie is that some of the scenes are filmed in darkness, which comes as something of a surprise considering how 'Footloose' is a fairly light-hearted film.
