Review of Footloose (1984) by Matthew B — 07 Sep 2010
Reviewing a time-honored movie such as ?Footloose? can be somewhat difficult. ?Footloose? is a movie that has been reviewed before. It is also one that some people will absolutely love, some people will hate, or some people will just simply like. I am one of the people who absolutely love the movie. I loved the movie the first time I watched it. This is also the type of movie that people can compare to many other movies from both the past and the present, such as ?Flashdance? and ?Dirty Dancing.?
?Footloose? begins with Ren McCormick (Kevin Bacon) and his mother (Frances Lee McCain) moving from Chicago to the small, Midwestern town of Beaumont to live with family. Ren, who is not well liked by the town because of his music, dancing, and modern ways, finds himself falling for the Reverend?s (John Lithgow) defiant daughter Ariel (Lori Singer.) To the Reverend, Ren and his music and dancing are constant reminders of the son he lost in a car crash on the way home from a dance. Throughout the movie, Ren continuously tries to prove to the town, and the Reverend, that music and dancing does not lead to drinking and drugs like they think, instead, music and dancing are ways to celebrate and rejoice.
Overall ?Footloose? is a great movie for those who like dancing along with music and a little romance. Some people might disagree with me saying that the movie is too predictable. Those people would be right. There are some scenes where you can predict what will happen next and the predictions are normally right. The story line also has several good moral points. The movie shows that parents only want what is best for their children, even if their children don?t realize it at the time and that if you fight for what you want, you will eventually achieve it. Even with the few predictable scenes, ?Footloose? is still the type of movie that everyone can enjoy.
?Footloose? is a classic movie that shows that dreams and goals can be achieved with hard work and determination. This movie also shows how some people will do anything and everything in order to continue to do what they are passionate about, even if it means standing up in front of the town and speaking their mind. Even though I have only seen this movie a three or four times, this is one of my favorite movies of all-time. While ?Footloose? may not be a crowd favorite, it is still a movie that is very enjoyable to watch.
