Review of Footloose (1984) by Muntasim T — 19 Oct 2011
I watched it just to see if the remake is gratuitous, and I must say, it is! This is already an excellent feature that goes beyond being just another dance movie, but turns out to be a lively examination of enforcement of fundamentalism driven faith that can take away spontaneous expressions of joy and creativity from life and crush independent thinking, something apt for this age of intolerance.
Kevin Bacon shines in one of his first starring roles and gives ample glimpses of his potential. Chris Penn is also likeable in his lean and flexible avatar, something unimaginable in his latter obese self.
Sarah Jessica Parker is in a small role. All in all, an enjoyable movie with infectious music, foot tapping numbers and about the eternal tension between the establishment and the emerging new wave.
