Review of Footlight Parade (1933) by Sibby W — 30 Mar 2008
To enjoy this picture in its entirety, you've got to really follow and listen to the patter before the numbers. The first time I saw it I thought, big deal -- I was focusing on getting to the big "production numbers".
One day I rewatched it, paying much closer attention, and found it hilarious and dirty-minded. Claire Dodd is a bitchy gold-digger, Joan Blondell saves her boss' bacon on a daily basis, and Dick Powell is very obviously a "kept man" who escapes through his singing talent.
It was produced just as the Production Code's noose was tightening, thus we have an over the top censor character who becomes a laughingstock.
