Review of Food, Inc. (2008) by Greta H — 25 Feb 2012
Do you eat meat? Do you eat processed foods? Where do you purchase your groceries? After watching the movie, Food Inc., you may think twice about what you eat and where you shop. Director Robert Kenner, along with authors Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser, farmer Joel Salatin, social entrepreneur Gary Hirschberg, and food safety advocate Barbara Kowalcyk, attempt to pull down the veil from our tight-lipped industrialized food industry.
For example, only four meat-packing corporations control 80% of the market in the United States. One pound of hamburger sold at the supermarket may contain meat from thousands of different cattle. In addition, so much of our processed food is corn-based because corn crops are heavily subsidized by our government making it cheaper to purchase.
The film also discusses the unintended consequences of our industrialized food industry: the obesity epidemic, the rise of diabetes in our children, and the sickness and deaths caused by contaminated foods.
Watch Food Inc. to become a more informed consumer. ~G. Huhta, Sebeka.
