Review of Following (1999) by Kenneth L — 16 May 2010
A really good example of how you can have virtually no budget and still make a very good movie. This is the first film from Christopher Nolan, who would go on to direct Memento and The Dark Knight, and in a lot of respects this movie resembles Memento.
It's a black and white neo-noir, with a complicated plot told achronologically; the story jumps back and forth, but soon enough you understand what goes where. There are a couple of big, surprising twists.
The acting is all pretty good, considering I have never heard of any of the members of the cast before. It looks like a student film: handheld camera, mostly natural lighting, fades to black, etc. You have to pay attention, but all the pieces of the movie do fit together, in some surprising ways.
