Review of Following (1999) by Kyle E — 26 Jun 2010
Christopher Nolan has the only perfect track record of any director I can think of. I honestly believe the man is incapable of making a bad film. So when I discovered last month that his first film, "Following", was available to stream on netflix, I decided to dive in, just to see what greatness this man started out with.
Shot with absolutely no budget whatsoever, "Following" is a neo-noir film that centers around a man whom has become obsessed with following random people. He claims his obsession stems from his passion for his job between jobs as a writer. Until one day he winds up following the wrong person, and gets mixed up with a local burglar. From there one of the most well crafted modern film stories I've seen is panned out, all in just seventy-minutes. Stick around til the very end too, the twist is worth it.
It's easy to see how this film establish Christopher Nolan's style and swagger as a director, and how each of his films since then have had a more, "brooding" sense of his accomplishments as a director. Each film he's produced has been a window into a world of fantastic characters.
Honestly, even for an "indie" film, give this one a chance. You won't be disappointed.
