Review of Following (1999) by Matthew K — 12 Jul 2010
Christopher Nolan's debut is an intriguing, involving film that demonstrates the fascination with narrative chronology and the human psyche that would later define the director's body of work. Evidently low budget, and made prior to the start of Nolan's permanent pairing with cinematographer Wally Pfister, Following is visually rough and stylistically simple.
The script however is pure Nolan, unravelling events out of sequence in order to keep the audience guessing right up to the end. The cast are reasonable, with Alex Haw being the stand out as shady thief Cobb.
Overall a promising start for one of the finest directors of his (or any) generation.
