Review of Following (1999) by Matthew H — 15 Sep 2010
I came across "Following" after seeing everything else that Christopher Nolan had directed and loving all of it. I bought the DVD without hesitation such was my confidence in the Director, despite not really knowing what the movie was about.
"Following" traces the story of a young man who has and obsession with following people (believe it or not). Along the way, he meets a thief named Cobb and becomess embroiled in a dark underworld where things are not as they seem.
The first thing that Christopher Nolan afficionados will notice is that "Following" is shot out of chronological order, similar to Memento. It is also shot entirely in black and white. The movie obviously is very low budget and features just 3 main characters, none of whom are played by stars but none of this matters because Nolan's script is superb. The amount of times you see a Hollywood blockbuster fail because of a weak story you would think that the studio's would realise that a movie succeeds based on its plot and not its set pieces or it's cast. Nolan has succeeded here by.
