Review of Following (1999) by Mike G — 06 Dec 2010
Edgy first feature film of Christopher Nolan... It foreshadows much in the way he has continued to develop his pictures including a non-linear plot and deeply conflicted, introvertive characters on one hand and others not to be trusted on the other.
Anyways, it's safe to say that the pattern which has emerged in Nolan's films starts here. Bill, the young man, the film's protagonist is a distant cousin of the obsessive and terminally forgetful Leonard from Memento, which is a much more finely tuned movie.
It's only 71 minutes long and actually seems like it should have a bit more, but this being Nolan's first major effort it was strictly low budget and economy was the buzzword. Still it's really pretty good for what it is.
Cobb, the antagonist and casual burglar in his suit who delights in psychologically attacking his absent victims, seems like a shadow of another Cobb, the one from Inception although the suit is much more Arthur's.
