Review of Following (1999) by Pushkar K — 28 May 2012
Chris Nolan is one of the most celebrated film maker among the people I know and im pretty sure over 90% of them either dont know about this film or just pretending to have seen it. For those who dont know, Following is Nolan's debut film which he shot on 16mm cameras on weekends over an entire year with minimum budget.
The first time I saw following, I had to leave it in the middle due to bad print of it. I caught it again this evening and all I could think of was, how can this man be so talented! Following is a great work of noir suspense.
For 70 mins of its timeline, it might seem bit dragged in the halfway but just wait till the ending where Nolan rewards you handsomely for your patience. There's gripping storyline, interesting characters (One of which is coincidentally named Cobb) and most importantly, his signature non linear narration.
Even in his first feature film, Nolan does not serve you everything, you have to involve yourself with the story to understand whats actually happening here. For those who havent seen this gem or still pretending that they have, this is a must watch.
You can talk about TDK, Inception, Memento all you want but this is the genesis of the man you now we call an emerging legend in the world film industry.
