Review of Following (1999) by Cailum R — 16 Jul 2012
With Christopher Nolan The Dark Knight Rises no doubt being another winner in Nolan impressive career. Most of his fans seems to forget about Nolan debut that would kickoff the career of one of the best director/writer of our time.
Following is about a young writer who follows strangers for material meets a thief who takes him under his wing. The plot is pretty straight forward and told in non-linear fashion with a couple twists to keep things interesting. Now I must bring in the duration into this since it's barely pass the one hour mark which makes for a brief, but satisfying experience. Though you can't hold the film length against Nolan, not once was there filler or a dull moment. It does have limited characters due to a low budget, but it surpasses it's shortcoming with artistic style. I'll say one thing for sure, you won't see the ending coming and it's a damn good ending for the story Nolan telling. The acting is nothing worth writing about, other than a fight that breaks out between two male characters that's poorly acted out. This is one fine debut if you asked me, it reminds me of a similar intelligent debut from Darren Arononfsky call Pi.
Following will you have hooked to it story and will end quickly before you know it. A must watch for anyone who wants a great experience.
