Review of Following (1999) by Freddy H — 27 Apr 2013
Short but extremely concise. It's very telling as to what kind of themes Nolan would later develop with his later films. The score and the camera/lighting work were what impressed me the most. The close ups, the mids, the tracking shots, made me feel the characters were very real and that I too was following.
The plot isn't really the star here, it's another convoluted puzzle type story (pulp fiction, memento, etc.). I liked it, nothing amazing but fun nonetheless. Like all of the greats, Nolan's debut explores interesting themes through thoughtful analysis and careful crafting.
70 min made under 6k, "Following" is yet another example of a great filmmaker at work.
