Review of Following (1999) by Terence K — 02 Aug 2010
Christopher Nolans debut movie aims to be more playful that it turns out to be. It is an obvious Nolan story with a messed up time line and an existentialism vs. crime-theme at the center of the piece.
However, the plot is thin and too thought through. It is not a coincidence that Pete Postlethwaite is starring in "Inception" as Nolans admiration for "The Usual Suspects" is very apparant here.
Unlike Singers classic crime flick Nolan does not succeed in making the audience guess along. And we don't give a damn about the characters either. However, there is some very nice black and white photography going on here and it has a nice first fifteen minutes set-up of the story.
