Review of Following (1999) by Tim S — 03 Jul 2013
Despite being slightly amateurish and not completely making sense in the end, Following is Christopher Nolan's debut film and is a blueprint for many of the films that would follow under his direction.
I got a very solid Memento vibe from this film, as well as touches of Inception. It's a very impressive work from a group of people who were given the task of making something slick with as little money as possible.
The only things going against that are the soundtrack and the fact that it was shot on 16mm film. That doesn't bother me at all, but it will bother some, I'm sure. Like many of Nolan's films, it has some structural challenges that don't completely pay off and leaves you with an unsatisfying ending, but the journey through it is what's important.
It has the unmistakable directorial stamp of Christopher Nolan all over it.
