Review of Follow That Bird (1985) by Timothy S — 17 Apr 2011
Two words: NO ELMO!!! =D.
(Well, he looks out a window at one point, but I don't have to hear him talk about himself in the third person with that abrasive voice!).
Follow That Bird is a charming and often very funny little film with great music and the Sesame Street cast from its heyday (Linda Bove for the win!!!). Jim Henson was still alive, Carroll Spinney is wonderful as both Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch (whose "Grouch Anthem" nearly steals the show in the first scene), and the incomparable Frank Oz provides the voices of three of my favorite Muppets (Bert, Cookie Monster, and Grover). Add to that some inspired guest cameos from Sandra Bernhard, Chevy Chase, Waylon Jennings, and John Candy. And let's not forget Sally Kellerman as the well-meaning-yet-ominous Miss Finch, and Dave Thomas and Joe Flaherty as the hilariously villainous Sleaze Brothers. Mid-80s styles and celebrities aside, this is a virtually timeless film. I've never forgotten the lesson I learned from it, either: NEVER jump from a moving truck....unless Gordon says it's okay.
