Review of Focus (2015) by Bill B — 16 Apr 2015
What worked: Will Smith and Margot Robbie have pretty decent chemistry, of course it's hard not to have chemistry with someone as gorgeous as Robbie and someone as incredibley magnetic as Will Smith.
The man IS charisma. The Super Bowl scene is a hoot. There are a few too many twists for it's own good but I do dig the last one. What Didn't work: Underdeveloped characters and plot movement that seemed forced.
His team looked like a fun group to hang with but we didn't get to hang with them enough. They definitely went style over substance here because the movie looks and feels great. So great that at the end you think, wow, that was a really good movie.
It's only after you think about it afterward, do you realize how much it was missing. In a way, they conned us. Doesn't mean I didn't like it, I just think it was lacking. If you like Will Smith and I sure as hell do(I had Fresh Prince and The Jazzy Jeff's LPs on CASSETTE!!!), then you'll enjoy this movie.
You just might want to wait for Home Video.
