Review of Flyboys (2006) by Simon P — 26 Jul 2008
I was torn between giving this movie a 1, 2 or 2.5 rating. A "1" would be like saying there's nothing good in this movie - but anything that reminds us that young men and women have been, and continue to be sent to a needless death is important.
A "2.5" would mean I think this film is 50% perfect - but it's not. I've actually had the chance to fly a (slightly) post-1st World War Biplane and the movie-makers just made it all too "Hollywood".
The real thing is shit-scary, noisy, smelly and feels like it shouldn't be able to fly, let-alone do vertical climbs, tail-spins etc. And the 'other' plot lines were all so predictable. No, this is not a great movie, but no, it's not complete crap either.
Oh and as some other reviewers wrote, a bit more accuracy with the history wouldn't make it less 'watchable'....so come on "H-wood", more decent stuff please!
