Review of Flushed Away (2006) by Luxo J — 11 Jun 2010
Roddy (Hugh Jackman) is a rat who lives in the best lifestyle possible, but when stranger Sid appears, Roddy tries everything to remove him. Unfortunately for Roddy, not everything goes to plan, and he himself ends up in the sewers. Gaining the assistance of Rita (Kate Winslet), Roddy tries to get home, whilst dodging the evil Toad (Ian McKellen).
Aardman and Dreamworks team up again, but this time it feels more like it's on the Dreamworks side than Aardman.
It can be funny, and the voice cast is okay, but it's not as entertaining as CHICKEN RUN or the WALLACE & GROMIT films. I think it's because they put heart and effort into doing stop-motion animation, which is what makes them good, but here they are doing it the quicker and easier way with computer animation. Basically, it seems like they didn't put much effort into it making it not as good as what Aardman can really do. But at least it still has an Aardman look to it, and I can understand that it would be easier in CG, it would actually be harder in stop-motion with this sort of story, but then again, that's the problem with it.
FLUSHED AWAY is good, but, disappointingly, not what I would expect from Aardman.
