Review of Flushed Away (2006) by Manny C — 23 Oct 2010
Disney's major successful animated films today come from Pixar while only a select few greats coming from Disney itself, with Dreamworks we have in my opinion the same scenario. only in this case as with Disney there's PIXAR with Dreamworks it's Aardman studios.
Aardman is the studio responsible for such hits as all the Wallace and Gromit short films, chicken run, and more recently the full length "Wallace and Gromit and the curse of the Were-rabbit" and this review's topic Flushed away.
The mixture of tradition, story humor and wit in Aardman's films including this one is where the company shines.
And although typically the studio's films are done in the traditional medium of stop motion animation, flushed away takes that medium and translates it into CG,and rather well I might add. the characters move and feel as though they were sculpted and animated in the real world. so don't take off points here for changing to the more common medium.
The story of flushed away follows a spoiled and haughty mouse named Rodney living in the royal neighborhood of Kensington in London, when flushed down the toilet by a sewer dwelling newcomer named Sid, Rodney has to find a way home, on the way meeting some new faces, both savory and some not so much. the overall story of the film involves learning to deal with loneliness, personal growth, a little bit of romance and some other great elements you'll just have to see for yourself.
The voice acting and humor of this film is probably the greatest element of the film. a good mixture of dry British humor with some basic universal humor and very little of the empty humor too many animated films and shows nowadays go after make this a funny and innovative family ride.
So all in all I give it a 100% because in my mind it has the perfect mixture of heart, humor and fun to keep you interested throughout as well as enough to come back for a second look.
