Review of Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) by Toria B — 16 Aug 2016
As a singer, and long-time admirer of Meryl Streep, I was really intrigued to see this movie, expecting to cringe and admire the lead role at the same time! I knew the story of Flo Fo going into it, and had heard sound clips of her dreadful voice on Youtube.
I was unsure how I felt about seeing a movie dedicated to someone famous only for being talentless and delusional. However, trusting Streep to be terrific, and expecting good things from Hugh Grant too, I went into it with optimism.
And I was rewarded. As expected, this was a delightful film, inspiring and poignant, with Streep wonderfully authentic and believable in this quirky role. And, as expected, it wasn't really about the singing, but more about the human spirit, about courage, determination and a passion for connecting with others through music.
