Review of Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) by Movie M — 22 Apr 2017
What I found most interesting about this movie is the fact that it took a real story, put it on the big screen, and still managed to make it seem like it was completely fictional. The premise of this movie is great, a lady living in the 1900s in New York who performs at one of the biggest stages in the world, and is terrible at singing, that seems completely made up.
But nonetheles, it's real, and this movie portrayed this story quite well. Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins) did an amazing job in this movie, her character was a very tricky one to play, but she nailed it, and brought this story to life.
My favourite, however, came from none other than Big Bang Theory star Simon Helberg (Cosme McMoon). His comical addition to the story kept it going, and while his character wasn't there to provide wit or humour, I still got that vibe from him, and it worked really well.
Although there were some scenes that were a little dry, and it was a little hard to see if this movie wanted to be more of a comedy, a drama, or completely in the middle, so I felt like it missed out on some jokes, or more of some of the dramatic scenes.
The 1900s feel added to the experience of seeing someone singing in a time where singers were portrayed basically as saints, sing so badly that most people would be offended, which added to the satire of the whole thing.
In the end, "Florence Foster Jenkins" is a very enjoyable comedy/drama, which takes an incredibly unordinary scenario and turns it into an entertaining movie. While it's not as outrageously funny as you might want it to be, or as emotionally moving as you might want it to be, it delivers enough on both ends to keep it afloat, and is worth watching if you're bored.
