Review of Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) by Amy O — 11 Aug 2016
The real trick to portraying Florence Foster Jenkins isn't just to get a great singer who can sing badly. Anybody can sing badly. It's getting a great singer who can make singing badly look and sound like someone who's trying her darndest to sound like a great singer.
And thus, Meryl Streep has struck a home-run. But the Oscar-worthy performance in "Florence Foster Jenkins" comes from Simon Helberg. Ticket to a movie? $10. Watching Helberg's facial reactions to Streep's singing? Priceless.
