Review of Flirting with Disaster (1996) by David K — 28 Aug 2004
Flirting with Disaster (David O. Russell, 1996).
This film was a true blind buy for me because I don't recall reading any postive or negative comments about it before my purchase. I basically bought it on the strength of Russell's Three Kings alone. All I can really say about it is that it was quite an enjoyable ride. I guess you could equate it to being like a Wes Andersen film without the underlying drama. This film is all about its quirckiness. If that type of comedy isn't for you, then you'll immediately be turned off by this film as it is one of the more quircky comedies I have seen. But if you like that style of comedy popularized by Andersen, you're probably in for a good time. I found many of the moments in this film to be genuinely funny, and I was watching it with at least a half smile the entire time. But don't let my comparisons to Wes Andersen fool you. This film isn't any kind of high art. It is a pure off-beat comedy with little to no attempt at drama. That being said, I still enjoyed it a lot and I can't wait for Russell's next film, I Heart Hucklebees. .
