Review of Flipped (2010) by Cailin T — 10 Dec 2010
A sweet family-friendly film based on a popular novel. The actors are fun to watch on screen together, particularly if you enjoy coming-of-age stories. However, the film sticks to the book so painfully that it seems to lose its own sense of originality.
The book is very very innocent, almost too innocent, which works in a book, but made the movie feel a little dry. Setting it in the 60s definitely helped (the book is not), but I still can't help but feel that Bryce and Juli's interactions are so doe-eyed and innocent that they loose a bit of authenticity and believability.
I get it -- they're only 13. But come on, the 13-year-olds we're used to seeing are the sarcastic, embarassed, ipod-listening generation. These kids are far from relatable to today's generation of tweens.
However, I still thought it was a sweet film to watch, especially if you are a fan of the book.
