Review of Flight of the Red Balloon (2007) by Jason L — 04 Oct 2008
Saw this over the summer (better late than never) while trying to keep myself entertained during an almost interminable flight. Needless to say, I was more than pleasantly surprised to find that I could access Hou Hsiao-Hsien's latest while traversing the Pacific.
Technically a remake of a much-beloved 50s French film, Hou moves from his more familiar cinematic territory to a Paris backdrop. Shunning, as he often does, conventional narrative, Hou opts for a rewarding set of structural and visual innovations.
The work of a master.
