Review of Flight of the Phoenix (2004) by Patrick E — 07 Sep 2009
A passable remake of the far superior 1965 original that's decent shut your brain off entertainment. The plot follows a rag tag group of cardboard cut out characters as their plane crashes in the middle of the Gobi desert. Facing dehydration, starvation and a group of desert smugglers the group reaches the only decision possible, to rebuild the smashed up plane and fly to safety.
The special effects are very good, it's the mostly awful characters and gaping factual errors that bring the production down. we the usual gruff captain, gun toting military man, annoying rapper etc. The only interesting character and the saving grace of the film is complex character played by Giovanni Ribisi who claims he can rebuild the broken plane. There is far too many filler scenes with typical Hollywood rubbish writing thrown in. If you haven't seen the original and can accept some lazy writing then there is much to entertain here as there is decent action scenes with good effects.
Passable entertainment.
