Review of Flight of the Phoenix (2004) by Mike E — 11 Sep 2008
B movie with potential. If you can ignore the Hollywood ending, the irrrational and occasionally downright stupid decisions the characters make and some technical irregularities you will be entertained.
For there are some good stuff here to. Beautiful landscapes, a couple of great effects and a visual style that occasionally glimmered. The combination of characters felt reasonable and kind of fresh, acting was acceptable (mostly) and this film had the greatest benefit any film could have for me.
Hugh Laurie! He was hilarious and he alone made this an almost pleasant viewing experience. But over all, I feel that a nice idea, a great concept got lost in a sterotypically structured hollywoodmovie.
Somewhere along the line it became cheap, and that's a shame. But they did spare us the obligatory lovestory. And for that, I am very greatful.
