Review of Flight (2012) by Derek T — 27 Aug 2013
The premise of Flight is fascinating: a veteran pilot makes a completely improbable crash landing, saving lives even as he continually destroys his own as he struggles with his demons. The story walks through pilot Whip Whitaker's flight, as well as the aftermath of the few weeks following the crash.
John Gatins' script is very well written, and the supporting cast is stellar: Goodman as the free-wheeling buddy; Cheadle as the ambitious lawyer; and Greenwood as the staid mentor. Reilly is admirable as the weakened love interest, but the movie works entirely because of the raw power of Washington's understated yet subtle presence.
As we watch Whitaker wind his way through the period after the crash and his self-destructive behaviours, Washington's gravitas carries the weight of the world and the subject matter. Flight is not an easy movie to watch, but it is worthwhile, especially for anyone who has ever watched someone spiral down because of their choices.
