Washington delivers a captivating, tragic, yet ultimately uplifting performance. His character pulls off an improbable crash landing (losing only a handful of passengers), only to have his drinking and drug problems come to light (though they really played no part in the crash).
His performance elevated a good movie into a modern classic.
